In what seems like a lifetime ago, I overnighted in the Javan city of Semarang on a train journey across the island. It was very apparent that foreigners were a rare sight. Even the pedicab drivers did not offer to "find me good hotel". The Christian Batak culture of Lake Toba is strikingly different from the rest of Sumatra. Stone furniture next to the steep roofs of ornate houses are characteristic of the architectural style of these people. I stopped here a lifetime ago to take a ferry to the island of Samosir frequented by international overland travelers.
