Taken during our 1993 cruise along the Thames River. We hired a boat and went from nearly Oxford down to Hampton Court.
It was a lovely spring. We had about half of the days with pouring rain, the other half with beautiful clear skies.

It was a lovely spring. The babies had hatched and were riding on the back of the mother swan.

We picked up the boat in Datchet. As we left the boatyard, we saw beautiful grounds on the left. Of course, that turned out to be WIndsor Castle (duh). We saw some folks driving a coach and team along that bank as well (photos not so good, so not posted).
The setting is just lovely.
It was a lovely spring.

It was a lovely spring.
Fans of Tolkein will recognize the source of the title (Old Man Willow) from Lord of the Rings.
(Notice the sign embedded in the riverbed. Apparently some boaters would try to go around the other way...)

Intercity Train Over Thames

Taken during our 1993 cruise along the Thames River. We hired a boat and went from nearly Oxford down to Hampton Court.
The photo does not quite do justice to what we saw. The train is an Intercity 125, meaning that it can run at 125 MPH. Our boat had just passed under the bridge at a maximum of 5 miles per hour. The bridge (the Maidenhead Bridge, I think) was designed and built for the railroad by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It opened in 1839. At the same moment, in the sky (not visible) the Concorde SST was taking off from Heathrow Airport, heading for its cruising altitude flying faster than the speed of sound.
Quite the contrast!
Oh by the way, both the IC 125 and the SST are very loud!

Lock House and Our Boat

This is about the most "typical" lock house you may see. The beautiful gardens you see are the pride of the lock-keepers. During certain hours, they come out and open and close the gates for us boaters. Off their schedule, the boaters need to manually operate the gates. We tried one, and found that it was too much of a workout.
It was a lovely spring.

Henley Tieup

Taken during our 1993 cruise along the Thames River. We hired a boat and went from nearly Oxford down to Hampton Court.
Here our hired boat is tied up near the center of Henley. We had visited Britain several years previous, and drove to Henley to take a look. While strolling along the towpath, we saw many private boats tied up. Since we had become boaters ourselves, we decided that we would hire a boat on a future visit. So here we were.
It was a lovely spring.

It was a lovely spring. We were quite taken with this "castle" near Henley. We were initially told that it was owned by George Harrison(!) That is apparently wrong, but we still have not identified this pile. Your assistance is requested!
