As our ferry approaches the Small Island of Rum we get to see a great view of its two rugged peaks; Askival (left) and Hallival (right) . This is part of the Rum Cuillin ridge, situated within the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. Askival: Rising to 812 meters (2,664 ft), it is the highest peak on the Isle of Rùm and a prominent Corbett characterized by its sharp, conical profile. Hallival: Positioned immediately adjacent to the east, recognizable by its broad, stepped ridge formed from ancient layered igneous rock intrusions. Enjoy full screen

Otherwise known as Beacon Rock. It is in reality a small, active navigation light built in 1901 and is 7.5 meters high standing just outside of Mallaig harbour. In the background we see the shores of the Isle of Skye with its impressive mountains further away. Have a good day.

As our ferry departs on its approx. ninety minutes sail from Mallaig to the village of Kinloch on the Isle of Rum, the deck hands get ready to release the hawser. We are very lucky here as our usual holidays of damp grey weather has miraculously turned warm with blue skies. From this photo you can just see where I took a previous photo of the harbour from. We walked along this Loch side many years ago in rain and very grey weather. It seemed a miserable broody stretch of water then but what a difference today. This is one of a number of piers along its 18.8 km (11.7 miles) length and this photo belies its incredible depth of 310 m (1017 ft) making it the deepest in the UK and 17th deepest in the word. It has a surface area of 26.7 sq km (10.3 miles). (The deepest Sea loch is Loch Etive which is only 145 m deep (176ft). Although there are some boats moored here, in the hours walking I only saw one moving across the water. See PiP for Loch church Best full screen Have a good weekend.

Our fourth day at Mallaig and we go to explore the nearby Loch Morar, which is the deepest body of freshwater in the British Isles. Before we get to the waters edge we pass by this fine church. This picturesque building is Our Lady of Perpetual Succour & St Cumin’s RC Church, It was built in 1889 by the wealthy Lovat family. Constructed from grey stone, the building is known for its prominent circular bell tower with a conical roof and its ornate interior stained glass. See PiP for alternative view. Showing the old life-boat ramp to the water we see here the busy harbour at a quiet time. The ferries have sailed and the fishing fleet sail at nightfall. You can see here the modern lifeboat moored by the quay in orange, on call for any emergency, which in this part of the world can be quite frequently Mallaig was one of the foremost fishing harbours on the west coast in the heyday of the herring industry but, like everywhere else, that has decreased and now the boats that are left are mainly involved in fishing for langoustine. Mallaig provides some of the best shelter on the coast for all weathers with the exception of strong Northerlies when the anchorages across in Inverie Bay on the Knoidart shore would provide much better shelter. Looking almost like a Himalayan mountain scene we are still here on the beaches of Camusdarach. A rather artistic view showing the higher peaks of Rum and the edge of Eigg. As can be seen, other intrepid explorers enjoy the view too standing on a small rocky outcrop into the sea. Enjoy full screen

As we continue south along this most wonderful coastline we pass behind this old boathouse. Maybe it is still used for something as the big stout doors were firmly locked. Ahead we see the Small Islands of Eigg to the left and the Cuillins of Rum centre stage. (They were actually much closer than they look here on this very wide angle 10mm shot.) Having strolled through the soft silver sands of Moray we come across one of numerous small bays. The wet sands here not as distinctive silver as the sands of Morar but still quite wonderful. We are looking north to the western side of The Isle of Skye with Rum to the left. notice the number of people up here! Enjoy full screen Best full screen

Enjoy with me our second day here at Mallaig. Today we take a walk over this splendid white sand with clear blue waters and views, towards the beauty of the Camusdarach beaches. The Silver Sands of Morar are a stunning series of white sand beaches near Mallaig. Famed for their turquoise waters and striking views of the Small Isles, they are easily accessed via the A830 "Road to the Isles," just a 5-10-minute drive south of the village. This is a view from our holiday cottage window towards the Small Islands and the Isle of Skye. Each evening we sat for above an hour watching the sun go down almost at the centre of this scene. We see here on the left The Island of Rum, then with a bigger space than it appears here from the centre (Point of Sleat) , the Isle of Skye. There is a big gap between the two islands. If I went wider angle here we would also see the Island of Eigg to the left of Rum and further on the right, the rugged Torridon Mountains of Skye. Enjoy full screen

A jump to our fourth day at Mallaig and we are here now on the Island of Rum. This was seen whilst passing through Rum's only village: Kinloch Village. Have a perfect day.

This is almost the end of the West Highland Line as it makes its way to the small town of Mallaig only about 1km from here. At times a steam train would be speeding through but not today unfortunately. The distant coastline is the Isle of Skye. "The line to the Isles"; so called because once off at the terminus you are at the harbour and ferry to the Isle of Skye and the Small Islands. See pip for terminus station at Mallaig.
