It looks if a thumbnail for a uploaded slideshow is a more or less random choice by the system. Is it possible to change it of would it be possible to get the first image as thumbnail ??

Could you please specify? Please give a link to the page and feature that you mean.

But if you are talking about 'Explore > New', then that is because people are changing the upload date to get their old uploads to appear as new.

Apologies for the delay replying. There has been so much going on around.

Unfortunately we at ima team have no knowledge on how the thumb nail image for a video becomes selected. It looks just as random as often seen at YouTube.

But I try to seek if I find something on this around internet.

Hope you will find (ever) the answer or create the same possibility as YouTube has !!

This is how to choose the thumbnail image on YouTube video manager:

On YouTube it is no problem; there you can choose an own thumbnail.

Then how about editing on YouTube, and then download, and upload it to ipernity?

Of course when ipernity works again.

As far as I know, and understand, ipernity only repeats what is uploaded. So, the thumbnail has to be defined on the editing software before upload.

Edit: I realized that is what you seem to have done Jaap. So, you used YouTube's video manager, and then copied it from there to ipernity (donwload/upload).

Unfortunately I have no idea why to chosen thumbnail does not follow with the video file. And after checking my own video experiments, videos directly uploaded from computer seem to show the thumbnail from the scene several seconds after the start.

I may have found a way:

I need to discuss about this with Rob.

That looks 'interesting', but I rally don't understand.

I see on my three slideshows three thumnails from different seconds after the start: 20, 17 and 15 seconds.

I first thought the thumb nail chosen on Youtube video manager would go along with it when shared elsewhere.

But looks like the thumbnail is more like a HTML5 definition. One may have to add HTML5 additional definitions to decide on what part of the video the thumb nail becomes picked from.

Few months ago Rob and I discovered we could dumb the old code embedding the videos with Adobe Flash. We manage to implement HTML5 code to repeat videos. But obviously we may have to edit the code some more, to get the thumbnail displayed from the very first images of the video.

I really do not know yet, how that should be done. But the web page I mentioned, gives some ideas.

An easy work around:

Post an eye catcher and link it directly to YouTube:

And that would save space used on one's personal account here at ipernity.

Unfortunately we have no resources to implement this.

It turned out something that would have to be done for the ipernity upload code. It would require more extensive tampering into the code, than just a quick fix. If it would be done, it should be done properly, and give user a similar tool and choice as provided on YouTube video manager.

Currently the snapshot (thumb nail aka still image seen on the no yet started video and albums) is taken from a scene after few percents from the start. It sort of works for most of the amateur videos:

www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=a&w=0&t=3&lic=&s=1

So, if it would be changed there also should be a tool given to choose, whether the snapshot is taken from the very beginning or on some other scene on the video, or even as an external still image as a meta file.

Moreover, some videos may start with shaking, or not so good first scene. It is more likely to have a better scene after few seconds from the starts. Therefore the very first frames is not a good choice either.

Therefore I agree on what Bernhard suggested. One can upload a good title still image where link to the video has been provided on the caption.

Here is also an alternative solution. Study where the ipernity uploader seem to take the snapshot. Then insert the title screen on that part of the video. Just like some movies start with intro, before the titles start rolling.

Thank you Sami.
Perhaps in a new Ipernity (if it ever comes to it).
