The Spam War - Something annoying that makes me smile ;-)

The longer I am here and the better I understand the peculiarities of Ipernity the more I recognize specifics, I have not known in the world I came from (Panoramio). One of the most noticable to me after a year on and off at Ipernity is the silently raging war over spam. It comes along with it's own terminology and it took me a while to understand the basics although I am still struggeling with the precise definition of spam, as it is understood here. There seem to be spam free groups and spam free comment streams and if someone does not comply to the spam free rules, he will be punished severely? Removed from the group? His comments deleted? This is a minefield, especially for new folks like me! On the other hand I find this rather funny. What's the big deal? Why all the excitement?

In the world I came from it was for instance common and generally accepted practice to include links to other photos into the comment stream augmented by text such as "Look at this, I took this pic from the same location 20 years ago". Now, is this considered spam here? And if yes, why, because the intention ist not promotion of my or even somebody elses photo, but providing useful information to someone. And what the heck is wrong with "seen in". Is that an insult to anybody? Or obscene? I find it rather rude to be kicked out of a group, because someone else added a "Seen in" comment in my stream. Don't be so narrow-minded. Why not just keep cool and take it easy? If I don't like comments like "great shot" I simply don't answer, but ban the guy? That's silly!

I agree with you Lutz. I never saw the big deal one way or the other. I'm glad some kind of peaceful normalcy has come and hope it stays that way.

I also found the whole business more than a little silly--remember the Big-Endians vs. the Little-Endians in Lilliput?--but if someone bothers to make a comment on my photo, I'm not going to remove it for the dubious privilege of being able to belong to some group! I simply don't participate in such groups. I think that's why things have settled down--Ipernity seems to have (belatedly but sensibly) decided to leave it up to the group moderators, so that people can participate where they want. I've found it a bit amusing that some of the group moderators with the Levitical rules on "spam" ("Thou shalt not!") now seem to be wondering why they don't get a lot of activity!

In my opinion Ipernity began to realise that if they banned groups and individuals using link backs to where a photo was seen be it graphic or non graphic group links or even an individual saying "Seen In" Blog group the consequence would be No Groups and lots of individuals in Ipernity Ergo No Ipernity of substance. Just my tuppence worth.

PS I brought up the point to IP that even the use of tags key words ( I use ) Such Tag "Botanic Gardens Dublin" "Dublin Zoo" "eagles flying Sligo Ireland " am I spamming for these places or promoting them. Yes I am.

OK its a long time since you wrote that

BUT,

now ask myself 'why do II take pictures, at all ?'

Beginning in 1957 with a folding camera
I took suitable landscapes _ also memorable family events

With a file for each journey/ holiday and sub files for each day

BUT then AI came along and for some reason said they were ALL DUPLICATES and sent them to the scrap box and in doing so removed all the names
10,000,000 files with random numbers

so i have random pics in random files > plus new files in new files

Oh No!!!
Please please please tell me that you have your photos in more than one place!!
If the answer is yes, then maybe you can take this as an opportunity to view your past in a new way. Scrambled memories might bring up new thoughts about everything.

And un-check that box where you gave AI permission to check for duplicates.
