Dear Members and Friends of Ipernity,

As we move further into 2026 – a year that many had hoped would bring peace – it appears the opposite has unfolded. The war between Russia and Ukraine continues, the Middle East is aflame, violence and conflict persists in parts of Africa, and tensions across parts of Asia remain high.

It is my sincere hope that Ipernity will continue to stand as a cohesive international community insulated from the turmoil that surrounds us. Even when differences of opinion arise – whether expressed through imagery, writing, or passionate debate about issues affecting the site, it is essential that members and friends treat one another with respect. In doing so, we preserve the friendships and collaborations that transcend borders and cultures. In many ways, this spirit represents a much-needed model for a broken and violent world. After all, above everything else, all of us are HUMAN first.

With this in mind, we warmly encourage cordial and respectful interaction. A wonderful example of this can be found in the real-world meetings between members (see www.ipernity.com/blog/team/4745514 ), where individuals come together to collaborate on projects, enjoy each other’s company and share their passion for photography. We have also seen members unite virtually for global photographic initiatives, such as the Aurora Borealis event of 19 January 2025, and our annual World Photography Day celebrations. In the same spirit, IMA will continue to maintain its open-door policy in order to preserve the sense of community that many feel has been lost on larger platforms and social media sites.

While 2026 presents numerous challenges from a global perspective it also offers new opportunities. From Ipernity’s standpoint, we hope to build upon the modest and encouraging membership growth achieved over the past year. Additionally, our IT team has gained valuable experience and technical insight from the unexpected challenges we faced during the May–July 2025 period, strengthening our ability to respond to future issues.

Despite the adversity of May-July 2025, Ipernity experienced three notable milestones that reflect the best of our community and its diverse group of members:

1. We had record participation for World Photography Day (19 August 2025) – a 12.5% increase from the previous mark with 81 contributions from numerous countries and continents around the world.
2. Numerous members got together for the annual Hamburg, Germany (25-27 April 2025) meeting to enjoy each other’s company and the art of photography ranging from group shots, portraits and that City’s many sites and architectural monuments and buildings.
3. We were represented by Andreas (Arlequin Photographie), Bernhard (Bergfex) and Corinne Pommerell at the PHOTON Photography Festival in Illingen/Saar, Germany (5-7 September 2025) where we were able to promote the site and hold in person discussions with photographers from the greater region of France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

Meanwhile, the extensive group clean-up task continues. Abandoned groups are being merged with active ones whenever possible or removed when necessary. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the team for their dedication to this difficult and time-consuming effort. Their work is already producing tangible results. I would also like to thank those members who have volunteered to assume responsibility for abandoned groups and those lacking adequate moderation and administration.

In addition to remaining active during the May–July 2025 period, our IT team implemented several important site enhancements:

1. Improved video functionality allowing higher resolution playback and improved clarity from screenshot images with options for medium and large-size formats with a convenient button linking directly to the image page.
2. Enhanced the group search capability, enabling members to find groups not only by title but also by descriptive areas of interest.
3. Improved group submission workflow, encouraging members to first review a group before adding images. This helps ensure that submissions match the group’s theme while also assisting administrators and moderators in maintaining the group’s integrity.
From a financial standpoint, our situation remains stable. However, operational costs have increased despite our best efforts to optimize expenses, and these costs are likely to rise further. As many of these factors are beyond our control, it is likely we will need to implement a modest increase in membership dues.

It is important to note that since IMA assumed responsibility for the site in 2017, there have been no price increases. During that same period, according to Google AI®, Flickr has implemented four price increases, resulting in their standard membership rates more than doubling. A fifth increase just took effect in January 2026.

Please know this is not a decision we take lightly. We deeply value our members and recognize that people everywhere continue to face rising costs of living – often with limited budgets – following the pandemic and, most recently with the surge in global energy prices.

At the same time, like the rest of the world, we must navigate the rapid advancement of technology and the questions it raises about the future. Will we remain a platform that encourages open and unrestricted creative expression, or will we become one that resists emerging forms of creativity? I firmly believe and sincerely hope that Ipernity will remain at the forefront, embracing technological progress and the new creative possibilities it offers.

I would like to believe we will remain a premier platform for artistic expression in all its forms: photography, digital art, AI-generated imagery, videography, poetry, articles, and blog writing. Ultimately, the direction we take belongs to all of you – our members – which is why the annual Ipernity General Assembly (IGA) remains so important. I hope many of you will be able to attend and participate.

Finally, with both sadness and gratitude, I would like to take a moment to remember two cherished members of our community who passed to eternity in 2025:

Claus-Peter (cp_u), a long-time member who played an instrumental role in helping to form IMA and save the site from closure when Ipernity S.A. entered bankruptcy. He was a person who deeply valued friendship and fairness. (January)

Héléna-Paule Fitoussi (HelenaPF), also a long-time member and an advisor to IMA, who expressed her love for the site and its members through her kindness, dedication, and many thoughtful contributions. (July)

May their memories remain a lasting inspiration and blessing to all of us.

As I conclude this message, it is my hope that our membership will continue to grow and that any necessary adjustment to membership dues will not prove burdensome. Such measures are intended solely to address rising operational costs, ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and preserve the continuity of the remarkable community we have built together.

Our finances are still relatively stable in 2025, but our reserves are steadily shrinking due to ever-increasing costs and stagnating revenues.

To explain and illustrate this trend in more detail, I will briefly highlight the figures for 2025 and then show some graphs covering the last five years to illustrate the trends that can be expected in the medium and long term and where our challenges lie for the coming years.

Looking first at the year 2025, it is noticeable that our income in 2025 has increased compared to 2024 (EUR 33,057 compared to EUR 31,201). The largest part of this increase actually comes from additional membership fees, totaling EUR 31,788 in 2025 compared to EUR 30,395 in 2024, i.e. EUR 1,393 more, or an increase of 4.58%. Nevertheless, membership fees remain well below the forecasts for 2025, which amounted to EUR 34,075.

Donations are also significantly higher than last year, at EUR 596.91 (2024: EUR 187).

However, our costs have also risen: EUR 35,838 in 2025 compared to EUR 33,465 in 2024, an increase of EUR 2,373 or 7%.

To explain and illustrate this trend in more detail, I will briefly highlight the figures for 2025 and then show some graphs covering the last five years to illustrate the trends that can be expected in the medium and long term and where our challenges lie for the coming years.

Looking first at the year 2025, it is noticeable that our income in 2025 has increased compared to 2024 (EUR 33,057 compared to EUR 31,201). The largest part of this increase actually comes from additional membership fees, totaling EUR 31,788 in 2025 compared to EUR 30,395 in 2024, i.e. EUR 1,393 more, or an increase of 4.58%. Nevertheless, membership fees remain well below the forecasts for 2025, which amounted to EUR 34,075.

However, part of the additional costs for AWS are due to the measures taken to address the availability problem with ipernity in the summer, when an additional server was used at times, generating additional costs.

We therefore ended the year with a negative result of EUR 2,780, compared with a loss of EUR 2,263 in 2024, and reserves at the end of the year amounted to only EUR 19,781 (compared with EUR 22,562 in 2024).

On the positive side, we can once again report that our reserves exceed our debts in 2025, by EUR 311 on December 31, 2025.

Our liabilities in the form of prepaid membership months have actually fallen to EUR 17,703 (previous year: EUR 19,369), plus liabilities from the general aid fund (formerly the COVID-19 fund) amounting to EUR 1,767.

Our reserves now amount to 101% of our liabilities (previous year: 106%).

To get a better view of the long-term development, I compared the figures for the last 5 years.

If we look at revenue versus expenditure from 2021 to 2025, we can clearly see that there is a growing gap between revenue and expenditure:


This negative trend is also reflected in the development of our cash reserves, as well as when we consider only recurring expenses (AWS, Google, DeepL, Gandi) and income (membership fees).





This situation will be difficult to sustain in the long term, and we need to take countermeasures.

The largest part of our expenses comes from our AWS costs, which have risen significantly over the last five years.



However, we can also see that monthly AWS costs have remained relatively stable over the last two years and are even slightly below the level at the end of 2024 at the end of 2025.



The increase in mid-2025 is an exception and, as mentioned above, is due to the extraordinary measures taken to combat the problems our site experienced in spring.

If we look only at income from membership fees, we see a downward trend from 2021 to 2024, followed by a slight upward trend from 2024 to 2025.



This is encouraging, but we need to reinforce this trend in order to be able to manage our expenses in the long term.

We should therefore consider increasing our membership fees at this point. Fees have not been increased for over five years, despite general cost increases in all areas. The corresponding motion will be put to the vote later in the General Assembly.

Beyond that, it remains important to stabilize or, better yet, increase our membership numbers in order to maintain a healthy financial foundation for the future and avoid having to consider further membership fee increases.

That is why I would like to repeat my call from last year: we must all participate as a community in keeping our website lively and attractive in order to maintain its financial health. Please spread the word about ipernity in your network, promote ipernity at photo events, and introduce our community to your local photography clubs!

5% Increase in Membership Fees

As is detailed in our Treasurer's report, due to inflation our income from membership fees no longer matches the costs. As William mentioned, we have managed to avoid fee increases while other sites have not, only needing a realignment in 2021 due to exchange rate changes.

With the uncertainty of membership levels and inflation, we think something in the 5 to 10% range is required. Of course it would be counter productive to propose a higher increase, and risk a decline in renewals offsetting any gains.

Therefore we propose only 5% at this time, to gauge the effect of the single currency amendment reducing the loss due to conversion fees on non-euro transactions. As well as a new feature on the renewal page for people to select a slightly higher fee to cover the bank and PayPal transaction fees, for those that are able to afford it.

We believe this is the route most likely to find broad acceptance, as well as being respectful of the varying ability of our members to afford the increase. We will be able to evaluate the effect of the different elements for the IGA next year.

We now come to the last agenda item 13:Miscellaneous.

The Team appreciates the complexities around AI and its place on ipernity.
We also know that the term AI covers many areas and this is partly why a reasoned discussion can be difficult.
There are varying points of view regarding AI both in general and it being on ipernity.
Discussions about AI have already been taking place on ipernity in varied locations, both within the team and advisors, as well as amongst some members.

We think it is important for the full membership to be able to have their say.
Therefore, a new group has been created, ‘AI on ipernity - Discussion Group’ www.ipernity.com/group/2835776 .
This will allow time for ideas to develop and for steps forward to be agreed upon.
Any suggested changes to ipernity resulting from a consensus reached in those discussions might be put to a future vote.

So that opinions on the place of AI in ipernity can be recorded into the minutes of this IGA, you may now post short statements of up to 3 sentences.
But this IGA is not the time or place for these to be debated.
Therefore, any comments about the statements made will be deleted.

I would like ipernity to remain an inclusive platform for all image-makers, regardless of the tools used in the creation of art. The paramount principle must be artistic freedom, together with the clear understanding that responsibility for uploaded content rests solely with the person uploading it. If any labelling of AI-generated content is introduced, it must neither stigmatise anyone nor place additional monitoring or administrative burdens on the association, for which neither the personnel nor the technical means are available.

Banning AI makes no sense; it’s something that can no longer be stopped. On the contrary, in the long run, banning AI would be nothing more than an attempt to keep younger people away from Ipernity. And from a purely technical standpoint, we don’t need to be any more advanced here than the major players in the market.

Ipernity is the right place for AI and other artistic creations, articles, not only photography, banning AI makes no sense as it would be closing the door to the unavoidable future.
AI has its place on our community.
AI creations must be tagged as AI.

I support the acceptance of AI as another form of creative expression. Images can be tagged, "AI-KI generated," and "AI/KI enhanced." Group Admins/Moderators should have the discretion whether to accept such images since photography is our primary form of visual creative expression.

My primary concern is consent, not a debate about what is or is not “real” art. I accept and appreciate my brethren in arts who like this tool. However, I don’t want us to follow in the footsteps of other sites which have simply taken the works of human beings and handed them over to the unaccountable brokers of AI without permission.

I have my own statement, but I find that Bergfex has stated everything in better words than I can write. So I second his statement (quoting here):

The fact that the presence of AI on our site can be debated proves ipernity's free will. And in my opinion, it should guide our stance against the toxic & blind race towards technology.

I think we need to look beyond the horizon and get a clear picture of the challenges and issues surrounding generative AI. Even though it’s very much in the spotlight, we shouldn’t just blindly accept everything; instead, we need to critically consider what we allow on our platform, in what form, and what we don’t.
