I tracked down the problem and discussions can now be accessed by visitors.
"Show the group discussions" is now ticked.

However, the Scavenger Hunt group now does not appear in my list of groups...
"You are administrator of these groups"

The listing of the group for a member has been corrected.
I have yet to understand why it is not shown in a search for "scavenger", now that it is public and should no longer be omitted.

Thanks Rob, all working OK now, except, as you say, it doesn't appear in the search for Scavenger or Hunt.
