August 15, 1910 postmark at Toronto. A rather bitter letter: "228 Simcoe St., Toronto, Not., Aug. 15/10 Dear Mother, Many thanks for welcome letter and papers, got back to the city last night, the firm's advertising end has gone up and am without a job for a while. It is cursed hard luck for me anyhow, four of us got sacked at a moment's notice without any warning that is how they do things here in this country. Love to you all from your aff'te son Joe. Will write later, Joe." This was addressed to Mrs. Train, 76 Cecile Park, Crouch Hill, London N. England.
Valentine & Sons card no. 100,500.

Postmarked Winnipeg, June 19, 1911, evidently from a new arrival: "Winnipeg, Canada 19/6/11 Dear Jessie: We both arrived here this morning (Monday) 4:00 a.m. after 3 days + nights in train from Quebec. We passed along spot marked X. Lovely scenery terribly hot, both well. Fondest Love, Lionel." This was addressed to Miss J. Coultree, Claremont Cottage, Shepley, Huddersfield, England.
Valentine & Sons image 100,522.
Garry Street, Winnipeg, Man.

Interesting Valentine & Sons card showing Garry Street in Winnipeg, looking north to (and beyond) Portage Avenue. On the right the tall building is the Garrick Hotel, with the small building farther down (which is still there as well) -- the Inglis Building (or Northwest Commercial Travellers Building) was built a year or two later on the site that in this image is occupied by the Angelus Cafe. In the distance one can see the tower of the Maltese Cross Building. The Bank of Nova Scotia appears to be complete at left (the white building) -- this suggests that the image dates from 1911 (plus or minus 1/2 year). The Valentine serial number is 107,228.
Y.W.C.A. Building, Winnipeg, Man.
First Baptist Church, Winnipeg, Man.

This Valentine & Sons moonlight card (no. 101,806) was sent by Alfred J. Clark with the typewritten message: "139 Spadina Ave. Toronto, Ont. , Canada 19.2.1911 Dear Miss Leech, Shall be glad to exchange cards with you Mr. T. Walker as [has?] done collecting so gave me your address. I shall be gald to hear from you SOON. What kind do [you?] like. Yours Etc. Alfred J. Clark." Interestingly this message is typed across the entire back but there is a cancelled stamp in the stamp box -- it looks as though the card was mailed in an envelope and then Miss Leech cut the stamp off the envelope and pasted it over the stamp box on the card. Kind of a pretty moonlight card showing the amusement park at Hanlan's Point on Toronto Island.
King Edward Hotel, Toronto (101,003)

Valentine & Sons no. 101,003, mailed to Mr. David Crombie (no, not that David Crombie), 47 Keith St., Barrow-in-Furness, England: "Dear Mr. Crombie: This is one of Toronto's largest Hotels. I thought I would send more than one at a time for it has such a distance to go. I have two cards from Hayle Cornwall but I expect a few more now. Kind regards. I. Tout."
Nice nighttime shot of an apparently fully occupied King Eddy. No one has gone to bed yet or else they are all sleeping with the light on.

Postmarked at Toronto, November 7, 1906 "Nov. 7th 06 Another view of Muskoka Lakes by moonlight. Guess you had better start a "Canadian Book" for P.C.'s. What do you say? I am sending five [crossed out] six this time. Hope you get them all." The fortunate recipient was Miss D. Mulhern, Craignair, Higham Road, Woodford Green, Essex, England. Bayley, 4 Duke Street, St. James, London, England. The date on the front is May 1, 1906. The back is a Valentine & Sons back I'm not sure I've seen before, with the word CANADIAN set in small letters, all caps above the words POST CARD in larger upper case letters.

Posted at Bala, Ont., on September 10, 1906, with an image depicting a wedding glued on the back (it's a rather sombre depiction) and the message: '"Lead us not into Temptation" Dear Beatie, hope this will not hurt your feelings but you know when an occasion comes my way like this I must use it. Kind regards to Percy guess he'll be knocking the stuffing out of me. Love to Ma + Pa hope to hear from them soon. George.' To Miss B. Gent, 1 Tendring Villas, Church Road, Clacton on Sea, Essex, England.
