Abner Dean: What am I doing here?

I gave customer's book a new look with some gray Buckram, handsewn French headbands and endpapers of Bugra paper. The edges are original and suited the chosen colours really nicely. www.veterok.net veterokforbooks.tumblr.com

Names, Words, Witch's Symbols

Finished binding for the Scripta Manent V , organised by The Estonian Association of Designer Bookbinders. The set book was called Nimed, sõnad, nõiamärgid - a collection of radical young Estonian poetry. And yes, the English title of the book reads like that. www.veterok.net veterokforbooks.tumblr.com

A variation of the Bradel binding, or "large binding" as some might say, with black goatskin back and boards covered with waste paper. The waste paper had most of the dye stains already on it, I only elaborated on them a bit with ink, acrylics and coloured pencil. I also decided against a gilt title and simply wrote the title on the front cover. All edges dyed black with ink. www.veterok.net veterokforbooks.tumblr.com

For some reason I felt the need to incorporate black cotton ties in the design, so I have laced them across the back and through the boards. They can be tied together but don't really serve any important function. www.veterok.net veterokforbooks.tumblr.com

Salaperäinen Tiibet

Found the right kind of type rather quickly, was happy. Type set for the title of Salaperäinen Tiibet, a translated version of the Tibet travelogue by Fosco Maraini.

Discarding ideas

I originally wanted so bad to gild the title on the back of the book, but hit a brick wall because of the lack of tools and the type, and in the end decided against it.

Headband

for the Scripta Manent binding. I liked all of the colours I initially modeled for it so I ended up using all of them instead of just one or two; This colourway then began to resemble a pale Estonian flag, very convenient for my design as the set book for the show is about young Estonian poetry.

As all good binders know, roughly a week before the mailing deadline is the best time to start working on a set book.
