Gesehen im tropischen Haus des Botanischen Gartens in München.

Der Atlasspinner ist der größte Schmetterling der Welt. Er kann Flügelspannweiten von 25 - 30 cm erreichen. Die Flügelspitzen immitieren Schlangenköpfe. Das soll vermutlich vor Fressfeinden schützen. Tatsächlich sind sie sehr auffällig und bewegen sich kaum. In diesem Lebensstadium sind sie nur mit der Fortpflanzung beschäftigt. Da die Tiere keine Nahrung aufnehmen können, haben sie eine maximale Lebensdauer von zwei Wochen.

Die Weibchen fliegen nach dem Schlüpfen nur eine kleine Strecke, zu einer günstigen Position, wo sie auf die Männchen warten. Die männlichen Falter können auch größere Strecken zurücklegen. Was tut man nicht alles für die Fortpflanzung! Sicher ein schönes, aber kurzes Leben.

Wilhelm, this moth is simply INCREDIBLE!!!! It's so beautiful and you captured such fine detail. How wonderful that you could see these lovely moths in the special exhibit. I too, have been lucky enough to visit such an exhibit, though they didn't have these moths. Instead, Monarchs and Painted Ladies...here is a link to my album...I had a fantastic time taking pictures!! :)
