Bay Bridge
Since 1956, Batemans Bay has had a lifting bridge across the Clyde River for the Princes Highway which follows the coast from Sydney to Melbourne. While lifting bridges were once common, particularly in NSW, this is the last such still operating, going up daily for the tourist boat, then again on its return. Needless to say, that causes quite a bit of traffic disruption, particularly in holiday …

Bridge building
Over the past six months we've had bushfires, floods and most recently COVID-19, but despite that the new bridge construction has been progressing steadily, as this photo shows. The image in the PiP was taken in November, some 6 months prior. Best viewed large.
More bridgeworks
The land-based end of the new bridge will connect to the large concrete construction at right. The existing road is behind all these works toward the trees. HFF, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
The bridge again
Taken from nearly the same position as the previous image, on a pleasant winter's day. This area now is a major building site because of the new bridgeworks.
Bridge building
It's been a while since I posted any photos of the work on our new bridge and it's a hive of activity. Best viewed large and other images in the PiPs. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
The barge and the crane
It is almost a year since I took the photo of the first of the two construction barges arriving to begin work on the new bridge (see PiP). They are each about 3300 tonnes, as they need to be to carry the giant cranes lifting these very substantial concrete sections into place for the new bridge. View large.
Clyde evening
Evening light over the Clyde River and the new bridge being built to replace the old lifting bridge behind it. Best viewed large (click image).
Extra note: I've realised that I should add a note about the black stuff in the water and on the sand. That is soot and ash debris from the very extensive bushfires at the start of the year, recently brought down the river by heavy rain.
Hanging out at the Bay
Batemans Bay is getting a new bridge. I am fascinated how far this section is able to cantilever outward as it progresses to joining the next. Taken in the morning, another from the other side in the afternoon light is included in a PiP, as is another with more of the new pylons. Best viewed large.
Well it's HFF! Best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
Old and New
It's been a few weeks since I posted on our new local bridge under construction. As can be seen, apart from a section on the far side, the main structure is now almost complete.
It's Friday again, so best wishes for the weekend and stay safe, everyone. Not to mention a HFF to all!
Almost there
I decided I should post this image separately, rather than just as an addition to my previous image. Here the barge and its large crane have almost taken the bridge construction to the opposite shore (stuff on a boat ramp at left). A week later it was time for the barge to depart (the second barge had left some time previously).
