Marine Park

I was very glad that, for World Environment Day, the Australian government has tripled the size of the Macquarie Island Marine Park, in the Southern Ocean, bringing it to over 475,000 sq km. This will completely close the area to fishing, mining and other extractive activities, and provide much better protection for the seals, penguins and other birdlife on the island.

These are King Penguins, taken swimming around the ship on which I travelled.
