History!

History!
Wollongong has a community museum, which is where I found this recreation of a historic classroom, complete with slates on the desks (though not the proper slate pencils which are apparently unobtainable). What really struck me was that, with a different building and without the abacus, it was a good match with my earlier classrooms ... just a "few" years ago. :-)

HBM and have a good week, everyone.

What is amazing is to see that here, at the opposite side of the planet, we had the same desks, slates, ink pots… was it so long ago?

I quite agree, George. No slates or abacus but everything else matches my school experiences!

Slates were gone when I was in primary school but one day when in 3rd grade I 'investigated' some cupboards and found two piles of slates on a shelf. Another thing I remember is the world map showing all the 'red' British Commonwealth countries. We had similar desks except with holes for inkwells.

What a wonderful look at the past George. A little different from my school days in that we had no slates, no abacus frames and the desks were individual with slanting lids and space inside for textbooks, - oh and inkwells in the corners. What struck me was the sentence on the board - this was one we used in classes at the Technical College when I was taught to type. Memories
Thank you for this George.

HBM and have a good new week

No comparison to the furniture of today's classrooms,
but this old furniture were and are very charming in their own way.
