The rainforest fig

The rainforest fig
A patch of sunlight breaking through the greenery of the rainforest to light the base of this fig. I'm unsure of the exact species (there are several), but they all parasitise other trees. They grow from a seed dropped by birds high in the branches of the host, then drop roots to ground level and proceed to grow around the host tree, strangling it in the process. Best viewed on black.

Many thanks, everyone, for your kind comments and faves. I'm glad to say that wasn't a snake around the tree, just some vine. We saw no snakes that day, but plenty of blood-sucking leaches. :-)
