The Most Significant Car?

The Most Significant Car?
A few years ago we visited a museum in Vienna where we saw what I consider the world's most significant car. Forget the Ferraris, Cadillacs, Bentleys or Bugattis: it's a fairly obscure make called a Gräf & Stift.

And its significance? One hundred years ago (28 June 1914) while travelling in it, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Duchess Sophie were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a South Slav nationalist opposed to Austrian rule. (A note marks a bullet hole). The killings precipitated the chain of events leading to the idiocy of World War 1, the death of many millions, and arguably much of the course of history since that date.

In this centenary year of the start of WW1, while listening to the daily news, I find myself wondering whether the human race has learned anything over the past century.

Posted in a suitably sombre mood. Image somewhat edited and texture applied. View on black and pause......

o0o it is an excellent picture George and the information first class
and yes indeed I think it needs to be looked at with this being a
very important date and turning point in many ways in our history.
It's fascinating to see in this old environment too ... first class
George ... one to be admired by everyone I am sure for different
reasons ;-) oOo

an artistic presentation and a great message, that war was really a tragedy (any war), every village has a long list of dead people...

Amazing. Thanks for posting this and thanks for the information.
Didn't know the car was still around though there's no reason for it not to be.

Great image for contemplation, very much in agreement with the sentiment of your third paragraph, no accounting for idiotic fanaticism is there.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments and faves. This is somewhat outside my usual style, but I considered the anniversary too significant to pass unremarked.

Your powerful, sombre, understatment is such a contrast to the cheapening Disneyfication of ANZAC ...
