You are welcome.
Yes they grow with the tree but in some areas where there are many earthquakes they seem to grow much faster. I have seen some that were 3 metres in length and thinker than my thighs. The oldest here is the one at the Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama 800 years.

This shows that plants (and animals, too?) adapt to earthquakes and natural hazards mauch better than humans!

Yes Gudrun so true. In 2008 I visited Mt. Usuzan on Hokkaido with three friends from Sapporo. The mountain is an active volcano that had erupted in 2000, much new and repaired growth was clear to see even though the ground was very hot and smoke/steam still rose from cracks and craters.
