Yes they grow with the tree but in some areas where there are many earthquakes they seem to grow much faster. I have seen some that were 3 metres in length and thinker than my thighs. The oldest here is the one at the Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama 800 years.
True, many photos of the roots are online in a very naughty way.
