royal arms of charles 2 designed by richard wallis of the painter stainers company. part of c17 window from the parish clerks hall in silver street prob fitted c.1690 .
removed during the war, now in the museum of london. the company of parish clerks is a city company without livery, their clerical attire being deemed to predate and preclude it. there are about 150 churches within the area of their remit, many have been destroyed over the centuries but still have parish clerks and wards.
glass from tracery of west window, looks like c.1855. the c17 glass that was in this window was destroyed by an I.R.A. bomb, tholgh the most recent pevsner claims that these tracery lights are either from the 1630s or 1690s, both ridiculous dates.
wren 1672-9, spire completed 1717. another ugly box arises behind; these foul things of glass are totally soulless, with hard completely flat shiny walls often lacking any advance or regression, let alone any beauty or humour: that threaten with their size and bulk, proclaiming the power of the moneyed over the individual, and denying our humanity. i find them totally alienating, puffed up with pride and arrogance, and can only think that someone in planning has no aesthetic sense or must have been bribed . how the architects can sleep nights knowing that they are ruining a city i dont know. i thought that the new block opposite st.vedast on cheapside was one of the worst, but i'm running out of superlatives when i see around great st. helen or london wall where they pile pelions of tinted glass on ossas of steel and yet produce nothing worthy of the name of architecture.
