painted back on the so-called penitential seat or carrel . the mottoes refer to sin and death. it maybe a c15 stall.there are two chicken-like birds at the bottom: the black one to the middle is difficult to see. the design on the right hand side looks almost post reformation, and it is possible that this dates from the early c16, could even date from mary's reign, when a lot of quickly toshed out paintwork tried to recreate catholicism. then again it could be laudian, though by then the hand of meditation would have been more likely written in english. a problematic piece as it could be made up from bits of differing dates and uses.
