And how about Thanksgiving? Do you spend that? In Finland that is not became a custom at all. I guess there is not enough commercial aspect to sell much of anything because of Thanksgiving.

Halloween has also slowly become a phenomena here. Although, it is merely a reason for young adults to have a party.

No, Thanksgiving is not done here, but Halloween is being increasingly promoted for the youngsters.

I'm listening to a African/ Caribbean music programme on local radio the presenter has been talking about Black Friday he said it originated in the USA it was the day after thanksgiving when surplus slaves were sold, he questioned if black people should take part in it considering it's background

At least a reason why there should be a better name to call such a sales campaign.

I have never heard that. What I can find out about it says that that version is a myth with no known basis of fact. Earliest use of the term was for a finanical crisis. You can read about it on https://gradesfixer.com/blog/black-friday-history/ The quote about the slave myth on that site says: "In recent years, another myth has surfaced that gives a particularly ugly twist to the tradition, claiming that back in the 1800s Southern plantation owners could buy slaves at a discount on the day after Thanksgiving. Though this version of Black Friday’s roots has understandably led some to call for a boycott of the retail holiday, it has no basis in fact."

I was always told that it was Black Friday because businesses run in the Red most of the year and the Holiday season is when, if they go in to the black, they can continue as a business - and so they try to sell a lot as soon as Thanksgiving is over.

I really can only be sure of what it is used for these days - a buying spree. The rest of the story is variable. One has to be careful of what one hears - even on the radio and from good sources.
