GIMP geo location export test

GIMP geo location export test
Finally success!

I manage to get geo location recorded on GIMP 2.10.10 for Windows after several attempts.

UPDATE 2 May 2019: Please also see more complete blog article How to add geo location before upload.

This is what has to be taken care of:

A) Make sure you have latest version GIMP 2.10.10. This test was done on Windows version. So, I still don't know if this works for example on GIMP 2.10.10 for Ubuntu Linux or other platforms.

B) When editing 'Image > Metadata > Edit Metadata', you have the use keyboard. Copy/paste does not work because of some ASCII format bug. The Unicode text format very likely does not work if you copy paste the text from some web page. The coordinates then becomes truncated to degrees only.

C) Coordinates has to be exactly in this degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS) format:

24deg 2' 12"
61deg 28' 9"

So, decimals degrees (DD) presentation and ° symbols ain't work. If you write minutes and seconds starting with zero (e.g. 02' 09''), that doesn't matter though. Metadata editor then just drops the zero away after saving.

D) When you export for example JPEG image, make sure there's "Save EXIF data" ticked.

Here are some online services to find location and convert DD to DMS format:

www.latlong.net/lat-long-dms.html

I think this might be worth an entry in the FAQ

I agree. I will consider writing it later. Then someone with LightRoom could add text for that as well.

I also added some more conversion web sites.

la localisation GPs à la toute fin des infos EXIF c'est intéressant, mais quid de la transformation des données chiffrées en informations géographiques ?

Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.

Anyway, this whole idea became relevant because of the current Google Map situation. We supposedly get the map location feature back running again at ipernity. But it is still good to know how to add geo location onto image at photo editor, before the image becomes uploaded to ipernity.

Thank you for your informations. To write GPS-coordinates in EXIF-data, I always used and use GEOSETTER, an easy to use, very comfortable tool. It's free (well, donations are welcome!). Different maps are available. I think, this is much easier than the different possibilities mentioned before. In almost all cases you want to position the photo directly on a map without caring about numeric coordinates or editing EXIF-data.

Thank you, Berny =)

Good to know. We will add it to more complete article later.
