Great Sharpness Depate

Great Sharpness Depate
Published under Creative Commons Attribution. So, you can download and view this on your own computer.

On left, Windows Photo Viewer
In the middle, Flickr
On right, Ipernity

For me left and right looks the same, middle (Flickr) maybe a little sharper.

See the discussion here on comments area: www.ipernity.com/blog/team/4698994

UPDATE: I guess the whole issue depends on "interpolation" methods used on different computers, software, and then at Flickr and Ipernity servers. In some cases they conflict and causes either "over sharpening" or "blurring".

I can't see any difference, Sami. I think it's the sunburst on the two outside photos that maybe distract the eye.

Download the image, open the image on your photo viewer, in actual size and then change the window size to hide the bottom part.

Pay especially attention on colors, contrast and details of larch needles.

I have done so. I don't see much of a difference, maybe a little bit sharper in the middle - but that may be a consequence of your initial comment ;-). I will do a check on my own, for a while I used to upload the same pics simultaneously both on flickr, on ipernity and on 500px.

It would be great to find the explanation on this. I really don not doubt the observations some of us has made, and getting poor and blurry results when uploading perfectly good looking images here to ipernity. Maybe the interpolation methods just conflict.

I would say: Flickr comes across sharpest, then follows ipernity, then the photo viewer. But the difference between Flickr and ipernity is so marginal that I see no need for action. Above all, because we should not impose anything on the users. Everyone has the possibility to sharpen his pictures individually before the upload if necessary.

In any case, it makes sense to upload a minimum format of 1920x1080 (Full-HD) or 1920x1280 (3:2) in High-Q-JPEG. Smaller images are otherwise upscaled on modern screens and mobile devices with high pixel density, which is always accompanied by loss of sharpness.

I myself like to use PhotoZoomPro (BenVista) with the S-spline algorithm for scaling. If necessary, I use the high pass filter in Photoshop for resharpening. But thrifty! Because nothing is worse for me than the ugly white edges on over-sharpening.

It probably also depends on the used camera. With my old Olympus E450, I usually found it necessary to sharpen the images a little before uploading them to any photo sharing service. Now my SONY smartphone and Canon G5 X gives good enough sharpness straight out of the camera.

I have done a similar comarison with a pic of mine that I uploaded identically to Flickr, Ipernity and 500px. My conclusion is similar to Bernhards. See: www.ipernity.com/doc/erhard.bernstein/46620294

Sami i am here and here i stay i can see the diff but my gallery on Ipernity is always going to be home and my main. as i use flickr for just a few i am in the main happy i made the choice to help Ipernity stand with us all as a group of people who enjoy taking photos and showing other on one of the best sites possible. i am happy that we can all have a home we can be proud off. i know i only put up money i know there are others who put in more( time and sweat) and for that i and i am sure the whole community are more than grateful for....................

I agree, Steve. Most important is to find a place and company where one feels good. I have used Flckr, and I currently use also Instagram, YouPic and Facebook.

Here I feel most at home, and that is because of the people. In good and in bad ... Sometimes we disagree, but that is only part of the life. Instagram feels very anonymous. YouPic feels even stressful. Facebook feels like having a serious concentration disorder. And Flickr feels like having a dementia.

Only thing that bothers me here at ipernity is difficulty to follow discussion of many. Dialog is not a problem, only the discussion with multiple people, which actually works best at Facebook.

Yes for most of us Flickr seem to show images sharper than the original before upload. So, if the ideal is to share images as they look before upload, then ipernity is probably best for the majority.

But again I do believe some indeed get different results depending on software, computer and interpolation methods used.

The Flickr version is missing the sun, and that could well affect the perception of sharpness (as opposed to actual sharpness). When I downloaded it and excluded the section with the sun from the comparison, ipernity seemed to me slightly sharper than Flickr -- but only when viewed very close up. Your results may vary, of course. Photo Viewer was decidedly worse, but we all knew that.

I agree with you about Flickr having dementia. It defies logic. I also agree that ipernity is, however, weaker in group discussion.

Yes, that is a good example. I still wonder, though, how much of those differences are actual differences in detail or differences due to differences in contrast etc. due to each site's processing. The higher the contrast the the greater the obscuring of detail etc.
