Wien, Danubius-Brunnen
Vienna, Danubius Fountain
The Danubius Fountain (also known as the Albrecht Fountain) in Vienna is located on the central plaza Albertinaplatz at the bastion Augustinerbastei below the Albertina and was first presented to the public in 1869. The depiction of Danubius (left, for the Danube river) and Vindobona (right, for the city of Vienna) symbolises the tense relationship between the river and the city - the wild expression on Danubius' face is reminiscent of floods and ice surges that repeatedly afflicted the city, but Danubius' hand on Vindobona's shoulder also shows his good side. To the left and right of the Danubius fountain are allegorical figures for other great rivers of Austria. The architecture of the Danubius Fountain, which was erected as a wall fountain, was designed by Moritz von Loehr, the allegories were created by Johann Meixner from white Carrara marble.
