Beautiful, but I read that the lake is two millions of years old, so, when was the island an hill?

Thanks for pointing out the mistake with my original title, "Once a hill, now an island". I was getting used to all the reservoirs, with dams causing the flooding of valleys.

I thought the same also, thinking it was a dam lake. But no, it's a real lake and an old one.

I got there on this 21 day trip. Indeed looking down on the old cone, and the BLUE there leaves this in second place. A previous trip www.ipernity.com/doc/robstamp/35907737

Fannette Island! The only island in Lake Tahoe, aside from shoreline rocks. Lake Tahoe is natural, but its level was raised about 8 ft (2.5 m) by an outlet dam around the turn of the last century, for water storage. Emerald Bay, where Fannette Island is located, is a glacial basin that's separated from the main basin by a sill. When Tahoe drops to its natural level the water over the sill is too shallow for some of the tour boats!
