Barrington Court

Barrington Court
Barrington Court near Ilminster, Somerset ~ A Tudor Manor House built between 1538 & 1550. The property was saved from ruin and restored by the Lyle family in 1920s, when the Court House resembled a barn rather than the proud manor house that it is. Young evacuees called Barrington home during the Second World War. There are Gertrude Jekyll inspired gardens, which focus on plant varieties and colour. The walled gardens produce a variety of vegetables and fruit which are used in the Strode House Restaurant on-site.

Barrington Court predominantly featured in BBC’s highly acclaimed recent production of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.

I love the juxtaposition, Rosa, of the two different styles of architecture. Both styles are reassuringly old fashioned. I love the way you have framed the buildings with the leaves.

In the second image, I love the effectiveness of the pond in creating foreground interest. The water-lilies and the reflection add to the effect. The colour of the building is in perfect colour contrast with the blue of the sky.

I love the way, in the third photograph, in which the building is bathed in beautiful sunlight. Nice framing by the building on the right-hand side.

Cheers,

Joe

Thank you very much for your kind comments on all three pictures Joe.
In the 3rd picture, the buildings on the right are where the second hand bookshop is.
Cheers, Rosa.

A great series showing the beauty of this ancient Manor House, dear Rosa!
It’s hard to believe it had been a barn ... fortunately it was not reduced in ruins and now it is definitely a place worth visiting!
All the pictures are very well composed and framed , perhaps my favourite one is the second, with such a charming reflection in the pond.
Thank you for sharing all this dear friend.
Enjoy your day.

I am pleased that you particularly like the second one. It had many big fish swimming around. Not sure what they were...I'm not an expert, but their mouths were big ;-))
Take care my friend and have a good Wednesday.

All three shots beautifully composed with perfect lighting and lovely spring skies, Rosalyn. A wonderful and interesting complex. Thankfully, it was rescued and not allowed to go to seed by someone who had the ability to see beyond the "barn" and imagine what it could be brought back to!

I think that Strode House whilst an attractive house in its own right is somewhat incongruous along side Barrington Court which is far more attractive in my view. As always your photographs introduce us to some wonderful places Rosa.

All the best

Another wonderful place and building Rosa. I see this is National Trust property and that might explain your many visits to such places on here. I thought I remembered the name and yes I see your wonderful walled window and HFF entry here too. Another lovely set today from you. Keep it up.

Keep safe. Herb

What a magnificent manor house............you've never guess it was completely refurbished relatively recently. They seem to have done a splendid job. I'm impress by Strode House as well, considering it used to be a stable block! Your photo really does both building justice Rosa. Beautiful in the sunshine and nicely framed between the tree leaves at the top and the grass and wildflowers at the bottom.

Two super shots in the PiPs...........I especially like the view of Strode House and the pond which looks spectacular..!! I really like the shape of the pond and the surrounding flower borders.

Great work as always Rosa!

Thank you very much Keith. The grounds and walks around the house are fabulous for walking. They also have some nice little shops there. Locally made furniture and jewellery as well as the 2nd hand book shop.

Many thanks for your kind words on all the pictures. Good evening.

Hi Rosa,

A very nice set of pictures here, and as always, so well composed. I like the way you have framed the top one with leaves, included the pool on the second to break up a big expanse of green, and caught the gap in the clouds just right to illuminate the building in the last.
The buttercups and few tufts of foreground grass make the top my favourite!

Best Wishes and keep safe
Peter

PS, I thought you were going to the beach today. Was it fun!!

Thank you very much Günter. This place was a home for evacuees during WWII and then it was a school for many years. It now belongs to the National Trust and is an interesting building to look around.
Best wishes, Rosa.
