Cerne Abbas ~ Benedictine Monastery

Cerne Abbas ~ Benedictine Monastery
Cerne Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in 987 in the town now called Cerne Abbas, Dorset.

You are never far away from images of the Cerne Giant in Cerne Abbas! He stands on a hillside just outside the town. At 180ft tall, this is Britain's largest chalk hill figure. It is also our most controversial.
Many theories surround the giant's identity. Is it an ancient symbol of spirituality? The Greco-Roman hero Hercules? Or a mockery of Oliver Cromwell? Local folklore has long held it to be an aid to fertility.

Terrific setting for this wonderful building and a fine composition Rosa. As for the giant, had to be the idea of the local Tourist Board of the time, just like the Loch Ness Tourist Board; -)

All the best, Doug

Thank you for your kind comments Doug. Much appreciated. Ha ha...you may be right about the giant, but you've never seen the Loch Ness monster I bet ;-)

This ancient monastery look so fascinating, Rosa! I love its beautiful windows and the old trees ...and the way you composed this picture. I must admit never hearing about the giant, who seems to be quite a celebrity instead! ;-)

It is Adele. Such a shame that Henry VIII destroyed so much of it :-(
I am surprised that so many people do know about the giant! He always made us laugh as kids...but I didn't really know why then!!
