Church and dovecote.

Church and dovecote.
Norton sub Hamdon, Somerset. Church of St Mary the Virgin.13th-century origins but was rebuilt around 1510. The dovecote in the churchyard dates from the 17th century and was associated with a manor house which was demolished around 1850.

My very old Ford Cortina Mark II broke down near here on the A303 (in about 1980, I think). I stayed overnight at a pub/hotel in the village. I was too worried about the cost of the repairs to really appreciate the village but I do remember that the pub was OK. I can remember being able to continue to Cornwall the following morning so it can't have been too disastrous!
A very fine shot!
Best wishes,
Andy

It wasn't as bad as you expected then Andy :) If I remember rightly the pub is called The Lord Nelson. I think I have a picture of it somewhere.
Best wishes, Rosa.

Yes, that was the pub and I recall it as being very pleasant and the staff and regulars were helpful in sorting out a repairman to come to the car in the morning. I don't now recall if I actually stayed here or in a b&b nearby. I can picture my room but not where it was! In hindsight, more pluses than minuses here! I always say a mental hello when I drive past on the 303 today (well, in the past few decades!).

That's good. You didn't see Paddy Ashdown in there then...he lives in the village.

Possibly Rosa but was he well known in 1980? I think David Steel was the party leader at that time.

I love the sepia tones here, Rosa. It's a pity that the manor house was demolished. I expect the NT would have loved to get their hands on it.
Cheers, Amelia
