Passing out orders for training missions. I began the '70s by entering the army on January 2, 1970. It turned out to be an enormously positive experience for me.

I grew up in a white upper middle class suburb and went to college with a lot of people from similar circumstances. I graduated with a strong sense of self importance and an assumed station in life; you know, a jerk. The army cured me of that and expanded my sense of empathy and humility, forcing me to work with and rely on people from different backgrounds than mine and to appreciate them for their capabilities. I received interesting training in military intelligence and was lucky in my postings, serving with a Special Forces unit but avoiding Vietnam. I also landed a job that turned into a 30-year career with an excellent company through my friendship with one of the soldiers I trained with. Quite extraordinary..
