Ibrahim Ferrer was born in the small village of San Luis near Santiago de Cuba. He was born as an illegitimate child, his mother was Aurelia Ferrer. She died when he was 12. As his father was also dead by this time, he had to earn his own money as an orphan without brothers or sisters. Besides jobs as a shoeshine boy and newspaper vendor, he also worked as a street musician. One year later he founded the formation "Jóvenes del Son" with his cousin.
He then played in various groups. But he only became famous in 1996, when Ry Cooder asked him and other Cuban musicians like Compay Segundo and Rubén González to record a record with him.
The album "Buena Vista Social Club", produced in 1997, was awarded a Grammy in 1998. His worldwide breakthrough as a solo artist came with "Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer", the first project in the succession of the Buena Vista Social Club success. During the recording sessions, Wim Wenders' documentary film "Buena Vista Social Club" (1999) was also made, which further increased the popularity of the BVSC and Ibrahim Ferrer.
He died shortly after returning from a European tour on August 6, 2005 in a clinic in Havana and was buried in the Cementerio Cristóbal Colón in Havana on August 8, 2005.
