Blackthorn - Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve - Denton…

I puzzled over why there seem to be two sorts of fruit on one bush. Then I remembered that some trees and bushes develop galls. There is further information from www.naturespot.org.uk/species/pocket-plum

These are the first Cowslips that I have seen this year. There are usually large numbers on the Downs near Beachy Head.

This was a single tiny flower head in the hedgerow. Apparently they often come in much larger groups. Perhaps this was the forerunner of a larger patch.

One of only two native species of Iris. They will be out again soon, I hope, although the pond's volunteers have gone a bit mad with the strimmer in recent months.

This photo, I am pleased to say, won third prize in the Brighton Argus newspaper's One Day in Summer competition - 2016. Unfortunately the reproduction on newsprint wasn't the best. I submitted the photo without the caption.

This is a sweet little plant with one or two tiny flowers on a long slender stem with long slim leaves. This is the first time I had seen one.

I have not been able to identify this lovely little flower. It was in a small cluster - I can't remember whether it was a group of plants or one straggly one. It grew to about 12 - 15". The stems are slightly hairy. The leaves seem to grow out where the stems fork and have five oval 'blades'. The buds are also slightly hairy and make me think of the geranium family. Any thoughts on its identity would be very welcome. It will probably be blindingly obvious when someone does name it!
