The 'glass button', referred to, is a Photoshop Elements effect. One can apply it to any image with a defined edge. In this case it was a simple oval. When applied it has the appearance of a glass button with reflective surfaces. If that is 'simplified' it creates a flat 2D shape with graduated shading where the reflactions were. Those graduated areas can then be treated with a 'color gradient' which is a preset group of colours. Different colours in the gradient fill different areas according to the shading of the areas. The shapes can be copied, layered, altered etc. It is a lot easier to do than describe.
