Duke Energy sent out notices to customers this morning --
There will be power outages for about 500,000 customers

Not something usually done by them --

So, this screenshot was taken from the NOAA page --

Well let's hope if there is to be a power outage that it doesn't last a long time Peggy. Be thinking of you, we are at last report with a 50% of snow ... Stay warm and safe. x

Safe - warm - certainly..
Snow we can deal with .. it is when freezing rain goes over it and the temp doesn't warm enough to melt the stuff.
Road crews have been out doing prep-work..
They have always been good about keeping them cleared.

What nobody has control over .. trees covered in ice .. branches breaking /trees falling over power lines.
If that happens, having underground power lines does no good.

So -- we wait..

Well, I presume outage is the American term for the British power cut. Here in Madrid I get about 3 a week, ranging from a minute to 5-6 hourts. It's been going on for some months, ever since they started a major road modernisation programme and they keep cutting through one or more important power cable!
Hope you escape it!

Yes, Andy --
We do have different terms ~
3 a week ?..

Isn't there a map of some sort showing where the power cables are?
Over here nobody can dig for anything without checking with Power Co. -- the Company comes out and puts small flags showing where the underground cables are..

Right now, it is the "quiet before the storm"-----

In theory, yes. In practice ...
Many mistakes are made! Hopefully it will settle down soon.
Also, in European cities, we tend to bury things rather than string it all up on poles! Means it's harder not to make a mistake I guess, even with sophisticated maps of the grids!

Wintry mix is a new meteorological phenomenon. It didn't exist when I was a kid. Just snow, ice, and stay inside or you'll freeze to death. Stay inside, Peggy! We need you here.

Should you have to deal with hurricanes, floods and snow?

Dick,
Thought we left the hurricanes for y'all ...
Snow -- we expected some, but nothing like this ..

Floods --- don't live near any body of water -- have seen the damage done. You couldn't pay me to live near a lake, river, or whatever ...
Yes, we have what I call a creek / river out back -- on the City easement the water flows on down to the storm drain.
City keeps the drain cleaned out ... so far --- so good.

Now, about those hurricanes ... what address can I use to send them back? Should I just go ahead and send to Grady at PCSO ?
