Killed by sand

10 Oct 2010 237
Today I found this little bird on my window sill. I think it broke its neck crashing into the window - the curtains have been taken off. My place looks like a dark hole from the outside, so I wonder why a little bird would want to go there at full speed. There's also no cats up here, but maybe bigger birds were chasing it. Se you in hell my friend.

Product of dry solder tip cleaning

I've always been a fan of the 'wet sponge' method - until I got my new soldering station. It came with a dry cleaner. I love it!

Piggybacking a 2nd 74HC595

This is the row driver and its serial output doesn't go anywhere (last chip in the chain), so piggybacking another chip doesn't cause any confusion. Unfortunately I had to remove one 8pin header. It survived, but it wasn't any fun. The result of the upgrade can be viewed here .

Weller WSM 1 - soldering station

YES! Finally! My old ERSA TIP260 soldering iron isn't bad at all. I've used it for the last 15 years or so. But it is fixed at 350°C and for some SMD RGB LEDs that is way too much.

Soldering the ATmega works great at 240°C with Sn60Pb40 solder. Using lower temperature keeps the tip shiny much longer compared to my old 350°C soldering iron. I like it.

The heating element and a sensor are in the very tip. Heat up time from ambient to 400°C is 4 seconds.
