The End of Windows 7 On My Notebook

The End of Windows 7 On My Notebook
TSC - The Sunday Challenge Sept. 13th: "An Ending"

After Microsoft’s relentless nagging to install the new awesome Windows 10 I finally gave in to temptation and curiosity and decided to try it on my notebook, which is not a production system, but more or less a playground. First of all I saved the image of the current Win 7 installation with Macrium Reflect (recommendation, very reliable) and then I pressed OK. What happened next was totally unexpected. Within an hour and after a number of restarts, Windows 10 was readily installed with all my applications and settings and even with my previous desktop including my photo. There was nothing to reinstall, everything worked as before. Piece of cake! Well done Microsoft, but why wasn’t that possible with earlier versions of Windows, where we had to go through the agony of reinstalling everything from scratch. I made only two small adjustments and installed “Classic Shell” and “Shutup 10” because 10 is probably the biggest piece of spyware ever created. SU10 from O&O disables all spy functions with one click. Apart from that I have to say, that I like it! After three days of smooth operation I decided to upgrade my desktop as well and guess what: The installation freezes at first reboot. All attempts following tips found on the web failed until now. Fortunately a reset at that point rolls back to the old 7 installation without a problem. I have given up for the time being. (look at the start button!)

Initially I had this one in mind, which marked the end of WW2 for my hometown, but that is from the archive.

One war ends and another begins. It sounds like more work ahead. I wish you luck Lutz.

It's not really urgent Karen 7 works well on my desktop, therefore I leave it as is for the time being.

So, the upgrade works on some hardware but may not on another... I considered upgrading from 8.1 to 10 on my ASUS T100. but then after reading some user experiences, I decided not to upgrade. Besides I just bought a 2 year old Dell Latitude because I really needed a bigger screen and more power to edit pictures =D

I also got this laptop without Windows (therefore even cheaper) with Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS operating system installed on it. The ASUS T100 hardware was/is still too new for Ubuntu, aka not all Linux drivers available for it.

It feels like coming back home. For some reason I just like Ubuntu Linux more than Windows.

Hi Sami, I have in the past tried al versions of Linux time and again. Although it's definitely a very stable OS with some advantages over windows, I always missed the software packages I am used to from Windows. It never really worked for me.

Yes, the limitation of software available is of course a serious problem with Linux. I have used to get along with limited resources. So, for me it is not a problem. But indeed, many things could be done more easily with proper software... Quite many software could be made to work on Linux with "Wine", but that I understood still requires quite much work, time and effort put there to make it really work.

Wine is another never ending story and an endless construction site. I have tried that years ago and finally given up. May be it's a valid product today.

Mal sehen, ob ich es noch zum Laufen bekomme auf dem Desktop, Uwe. Aber das hat geringen Priorität (obwohl man das natürlich genau wissen möchte, woran das nun liegt)

Oh dear! That is not good news - I have upgraded my desktop and laptop quite successfully and W 10 is running like a dream.

Sometimes a new install can be glitchy, you will probably find that if you were to repeat the install it would be just fine.

Hi Paul, so far I tried various times without success. Disabled non MS services, updated all my drivers, run chkdsk /F/R /B, run sfc /scannow . No clue from the error logfile. Give me a break ;-))

With all the computer problems I've had of late I'm still putting off the upgrade from 8.1 to 10 so interesting to read what you and others have to say on the subject! :)

I skipped 8 and 8.1 because I found those 2 versions unuseable. 10 feels a lot more like 7 again and comes with some neat additional features. .

LutzP club has replied to Gudrun club
Eigentlich gibt es auch keinen Grund zu wechseln, es gibt nichts, was ich wirklich vermissen würde in7 (jedenfalls bis jetzt). Frisst wenig Speicher, das Download startet erst, wenn du auf o.k. clickst.

I am still using the Windows 7 program that came installed on my laptop computer when I bought it new, and it has been virtually trouble free for me the whole time. There is no way I am going to risk losing that kind of reliability until I have to, lol! A great idea for the challenge, though :-)

The story behind your archive photo is fascinating, Lutz; thanks for sharing!

Great idea! I'm still hanging onto XP since Windows 10 will make my scanner obsolete!
LutzP club has replied to Indycaver (Norm) club
You are a brave man, Norm. After termination of the support for XP the bad guys are all over the place because they look for bugfixes on 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 and assume, that these doors may be open in XP as well, since there is a great deal of unchanged code. So better watch out where you go. I was surprised, that my ancient printers (canon Pixma ip4000, over 10 years now) are still supported by 10. They accept unchipped cartridges, which I buy for 50 ct each. Greets Lutz

I have not downloaded 10 because I have read about so many problems. Anyway, 7 is familiar and it works very well for my needs (which are few!). Nice to know you at least had success for your laptop.

...if it ain't broke, don't mess with it (old engineering wisdom ;-))). 7 is fine and will be supported another 5 years. However, once 10 works it is a nice OS. Greetings and habe a nice WE
