Pair of Bracelets with a Grapevine Pattern in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010

Pair of Bracelets with a Grapevine Pattern in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010
Pair of Bracelets with Grapevine Pattern
Byzantine, found in 1902, at Karavas, Cyprus
Made late 500s-early 600s, possibly in Constantinople

Accession # 17.190.148, .149

Heavy, rigid gold bracelets like this pair are opened by the pins S beside the medallions at their centers. The grapevines decorating these bracelets were made by attaching small gold sheets worked as leaves and triangular groups of grapes to thick gold wires.
