Roman Gold Beaker in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Roman Gold Beaker in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Beaker
Roman, from Knidos (in present-day Turkey), 1-100 AD
Gold; weight: 656.3 grams

Simple in shape and minimally decorated, this tall cup is one of only a few surviving examples of solid gold vessels from the Roman period. A Latin inscription under the foot records the vessel's weight as two libra, one sescunia. The beaker was found in the sea by fishermen near the city of Knidos at the turn of the twentieth century.

Text from the Getty Villa museum label.
