Kylix with a Religious Procession in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Kylix with a Religious Procession in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Wine Cup with a Religious Procession
Greek, made in Athens, about 510 BC
Terracotta
Red-figured kylix attributed to the Briseis Painter

Inventory # 82.AE.42

The exterior of this cup depicts youths with horses preparing for a religious procession. The horsemen are probably members of the Athenian cavalry, and the bearded man with a staff may be an official inspecting the arrangements. Processions, which played a significant role in ancient life, involved musicians and athletes as well as the cavalry.
