Pyrit, auch als Schwefelkies oder Eisenkies sowie Katzen- oder Narrengold bekannt, ist ein sehr häufig vorkommendes Mineral aus der Klasse der „Sulfide und Sulfosalze“. Chemisch gesehen ist es die kubische Modifikation des Eisen(II)-disulfids mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung FeS2, besteht also aus Eisen und Schwefel im Stoffmengenverhältnis von 1 : 2.
Pyrit ist in jeder Form undurchsichtig (opak) und entwickelt überwiegend idiomorphe Kristalle in der Form von Würfeln oder Pentagondodekaedern. Auch Oktaeder und Disdodekaeder sind verbreitet sowie Kombinationen zwischen diesen Formen. Die Kristallflächen zeigen oft eine charakteristische Streifung und im frischen Zustand einen lebhaften Metallglanz.
Mit einer Mohshärte von 6 bis 6,5 gehört Pyrit zu den harten Mineralen, die sich ähnlich wie das Referenzmineral Orthoklas (6) gerade noch mit einer Feile ritzen lassen. [wikipedia, 10.04.2021]
