Garrard monuments

The monument to Elizabeth Garrard, wife of Sir John Garrard of Lamer, 1st Baronet in St Helen's Church, Wheathampstead, Herts. They had eight daughters and six sons of which one daughter and one son died young as shown by them holding a skull. The monument is a splendid example of a early 17th century monument.

This reads: Here lyes the body of The virtuous ladie Dame Elizabeth Garrard, late wife of Sir John Garrard, Knight And Baronet, one of the deputie luietennants of this Countie: sonne of Sir John Garrard, and Grandchild of Sr. William Garrard, Knights, both of them sometyme Lord Maiors Of the Cittie of London whose ancestors lie buryed in the parish Church of Sittingburne in Kent, but themselves in the Parish Church of St Magnus in London: she was the eldest daughter of Sr Edward Barkham Kt. Sometyme Lord Maior of the Cittie of London, married in the yeare of our Lord 1611, called by God out of this life the 17th day of April in the yeare of our Lord 1632: being then in the 39th yeare of her age: mother of 14 children, sixe Sonnes and eight daughters (whereof two, a sonne and daughter, went before her To heaven, the rest she left behind her upon earth, first comendinge them by devout Prayers unto God and then deliveringe them over with hearty desires to her beloved Husband, to be further instructed in the feare of God:) Towards God a most faithfull child Towards her hwsband a loyall spouse towards her children a most lovinge mother Towards the poor a most charitable neighbour in health praysing God, in sickness bearing Patiently: she lived most Godly, and dyed most comfortably: beqveathing her body unto earth In assured hope of a blessed resurrection: and her soule unto God, in confidence of her Salvation. Here resteth the vertuous body of Isabella Garrard Youngest daughter of Sir John Garrard Knight and Baronet and by his wife the Lady Jane Garrard who left This life for a better in the yeare of her age the 10 day of August Ann 1677. Virtus Sepulcri Ignara Est. Interestingly, despite the male effigy, it doesn't appear that her husband is buried here. Note also that the number of years for Isabella is missing. There is gap which appears to have never been completed.

This is the monument to Sir Samuel Garrard, fifth Baronet of Lamer (1692 to 1761). Sir Samuel had an interesting life having served with the Duke of Marlborough. His brother became the sixth and last Baronet Lamer (c. 1704 to 1767). Monuments to all six baronets can be found at St Helen's. I photographed this monument several years ago for a lecture on Lamer.

In contrast to his brother, the fifth Baronet, Bennet seems to have led a quiet life with being "cheerful in his disposition" his main claim to fame. He had no children and was the last Baronet. The Estate went to the Drake branch of the family, who took the name Garrard.
