Uppark House

Uppark House
Yesterday, we took a drive out to Uppark House and Gardens (National Trust). Although the house is closed (due to the corona virus) the gardens were open free of charge to the public. There were quite a few people there, but the gardens are very large and everyone seemed to be behaving responsibly and keeping well away from everyone else, which was good to see. We took a picnic lunch and had a lovely few hours out and some fresh air.

Sadly it seems that the National Trust have had to close their gardens as well from today, due to a minority of the public being seemingly incapable of following Government advice to practice Social Distancing, putting all of us at more risk!

We are fortunate in that we live very close to the coast and also some wonderful countryside, so as long as we are able (and allowed) we will continue to make the occasional foray out. Unlike some, we are also fortunate to have a garden to use as well. We feel very lucky under the circumstances.

Not yet Jean-luc - unless we are over 70 years old or have underlying medical problems we are strongly advised to practice "Social Distancing". Keeping away from others (at least 2 meters), unless we have any symptoms then we have to isolate ourselves at home. Unfortunately, a substantial minority are not taking the virus seriously, which I expect means we'll soon find ourselves locked down completely :-(

What a beautiful house it is Keith. I have just looked at the link and I think I remember the fire there in 1989. Not long before Windsor Castle also caught fire. I bet you're glad you took the opportunity to visit and have your picnic yesterday. I wonder if the government should order a lockdown now, if people cannot behave responsibly. I look forward to seeing many pictures from your garden, as you will probably be seeing more from mine ;-)

It's a lovely place Rosa. Yesterday was open..........today it's not :-( I don't think a lock down is too far away - a substantial minority don't seem to take the virus seriously..!!

It's a very lovely building. At least you got in before they closed and I hope you enjoyed your visit. I haven't been near Falkland Palace as it doesn't have extensive grounds. The sun is shining in a completely cloudless sky today and when I came over the hill road the car park for walkers was packed. The village and Falkland Estate are probably busy too as they are all popular with tourists and Fifers. I've opted for staying in the house and garden over the weekend and probably for most of the time from now on.

It's really beautiful there Jean.............and there are several more NT places within driving distance............but sadly, I'm not going to get to them for the foreseeable future.

As long as we remain symptom free and until the Government locks us down, we'll still try for the odd day out if it's sensible to do so, but like you, I expect we'll be confined to the garden soon.

Good that you managed to get out and felt safe but I think we are all going to be told to stay home at some point soon. As you say those of us lucky enough to have a garden ( or at least a view of nice one ) will be grateful

It was a lovely day Colin............but it's getting more and more unlikely that getting out for the day will be an option...........we're just taking each day as it comes.

In Germany we now have a ban on all public meetings of more than 2 persons (parents with children excepted) and a distance of 1,5m ist to be kept at all times.

Hi Keith, as folk have said above, an excellent capture here. I too have followed the stories about social distancing. A couple of days ago we parked in a lonely car-park to do a normally lonely path passing some of our reservoirs. On our way back there were far more people about than I have almost ever seen here. Our car park and the nearby off-road parking was all full. It seems that everyone has the same idea to get away from our fellow men and do some exercise. At least on the coast you have perhaps a much wider way to walk. I fear now that it is only a matter of time before all such outings will also be forbidden. Like you, I am grateful of our biggish garden and house and not least my exercise bike where I can peddle along virtual trails on my big screen. And -we have lots of photos to still edit, admire, post and chat about here.

It's only a minority (albeit a substantial one) who seem to lack the self-discipline to follow the rules. It's inevitable that the "strong advice" will be made compulsory sooner rather than later!

Tout à fait d'accord avec tes propos Keith. Ici, nous sommes confinés depuis une semaine. Celà risque de se durcir dés demain. Les gens, dans leur majorité, suivent scrupuleusement les consignes mais il y a toujours des imbéciles et / ou inconscients. Par contre, dans ce monde trés égoïste, j'apprécie beaucoup ce sentiment de solidarité universel qui de déssine. J'espére qu'une fois l'épreuve passée il restera quelque chose de celà. Yes, the pandemic has brought out the good in the vast majority of people but sadly it also seems to have brought out the worst in some! I'm not sure that will ever change!

We are now in lockdown Annemarie and we are only allowed out under certain conditions. The police now have powers to enforce the rules. All businesses that are not essential have been closed and there are bans on public gatherings etc. I hope people behave more responsibly this time!

Thanks Wilhelm. In fact the gardens closed the following day and we are now all in lockdown and can only leave our houses under certain specific conditons. All non-essential businesses have been ordered to close and there is a ban on public gatherings. Testing times!
