The Sunday Challenge - Panning

The Sunday Challenge - Panning
Panning!

This was a rather intimidating challenge as I don't do much shooting without my trusty tripod. I almost didn't make it until the last minute when it finally started making sense what I needed to do.

I went through several hundred shots and this was the best one of the bunch. It helped when I discovered that "Continuous Auto Focus" was called "Burst Mode" in my camera and once I was able to turn the "Review" feature off I could get the camera to take the continuous shots that were needed for this "panning" (ahem)... technique.

All the tips and links from the group were great help with this. One tip was to use the"center auto focus point" setting, but mine is "greyed out" on my camera and I haven't been able to figure out how to change that yet. I think that would help me a lot with the focus part. I am eager to try this technique on something other than a car, but that was all that was available to me this week.

It was actually getting fun towards the end (don't hit me!) ;)

Don Sutherland, autofantasia, Indycaver (Norm), and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

You did it! You managed to keep the car sharp and backround blurred, well done, Karen!

Very nice blur to the background. I was once photographing cars on an overpass and noticed that a lot of the drivers were making obscene gestures as they passed below. I hope that this did not happen to you. If your husband was the driver, you should be okay.

Perfect car advertisement material. Car is razor sharp and blurred background so nice and vivid.

EDIT: Oh, and I applaud you for having fun after all.

Great photo Karen! Multipoint focus will work as long as you keep all the points within the object you're panning.

How cool that you hated the challenge early on and that it only seemed to be coming right at the end. Must say I do like this one Karen! :)

The only thing I might have done differently is the crop ... might have worked even better with an elongated/widescreen crop (something like 4 x 6 even), just to lose a little of the foreground? :)

What a good suggestion Paul. I don't like to swap my photo after so many comments, but I did some more cropping and uploaded 3 photos for to look at:

Original

4 x 6

and: one with a little more cropped off the bottom

Thanks for your input. Cropping the bottom off really adds more speed to the photo and is a great idea. Which one do you like the best?

Back again ... I'd opt for the last one Karen: Version 2, but then that's just me! :)
