Calopogon barbatus (Bearded grass-pink orchid)
|
|
I made a day trip to the Francis Marion National Forest to check out a possible new orchid site. Didn't find any there, but I did visist a couple of my reliable orchid sites where I found the early, Calopogon barbatus orchid in bloom.

Spiranthes odorata (Fragrant Ladies'-tresses)

This is a fragrant orchid that is found along the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It is commonly known as Fragrant Ladies'-tresses.
We got to the location in late afternoon when the sunlight was shining on the plant from almost a horizontal direction. In addition, the light was soft and warm, unlike the harsh mid-day light.

Platanthera ciliaris (Yellow fringed orchid)
Gymnadeniopsis integra (Yellow fringless orchid)

It was a big surprise to see this one in the Francis Marion. It is more plentiful just up the road in the Green Swamp of North Carolina.

This composite photo shows the putative parent orchids and their progeny. Since both parent species generally bloom about the same time of the year, it is understandable how a pollinator might take pollen from one plant species and deposit it in another plant species of the same genus. The result can be a very handsome hybrid.
