Terrific! There a re few villages like this in the Sistema Central in Spain and I can see the granite geology is the same. I tried taking some photos but the angles were all wrong. I would need to get invited into a house and go to an upper floor window!

Thank you Andy. It is in the core of Iberia exactly in the Lusitania, the castros zone.
A castro is a fortified pre-Roman Iron Age village, usually located on a hill or some naturally easy defendable place. They were made out of stone with thatch roofs resting on a wood column in the centre of the building. In the major oppida there were regular streets, suggesting some form of central organization. Castros vary in area from less than a hectare to some 50 hectare ones, and most were abandoned after the Roman conquest of the territory

Thank you for that info, Isabel. I have always been fascinated by village origins, why they were established at such such a site, etc etc. Your explanation of these village origins and also the 'castro' name is extremely interesting to me. I should have realised the castro name came frorm the latin for military camp, I just never thought about it, despite quite a few of my students having this common surname! And I certainly didn't know that it was the Latin term for a PRE- Roman fortification; even more interesting!

Just to cross the t and dot the i on this subject:
Please do remember that in the very South of the country there is a very old village by the Guadiana River with the name Castro Marim ( the Phoenicians took salt and other things from there). And on the very North of Portugal there is an ancient village known because they still breed what is probably the oldest shepherd dog of Iberia, now almost in extinction ( but I am the proud owner of one ...) called Castro Laboreiro.
