Tent caterpillars are readily recognized because they are social, colorful, diurnal and build conspicuous silk tents in the branches of host trees. Some species, such as the eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum, and caterpillars of the small eggar moth, Eriogaster lanestris, build a single large tent which is typically occupied through the whole of the larval stage, while others build a series of small tents that are sequentially abandoned. Whereas tent caterpillars make their tents in the nodes and branches of a tree's limbs, webworms enclose leaves and small branches at the ends of the limbs

There were a row of trees and all of them carried this fantastic veils or tents.

I know the processionary pine moth caterpillar is very irritating if you should accidentally brush by their progress from one pine tree to another and their webs look a bit like this, and I know you have them in Portugal just as we have them in La Sistema Central in Spain ... but are these just as much an irritant if you accidentally touch them?

I dont know Andy but I have never heard of it.
The long row of trees in cause were more or less in the middle of the park also frequented by toddlers but never saw any sign or reference to stay clear.
