The forecast for Friday is sunny, so unless it changes in the meantime I hope to get up there.

Hope you enjoy a good solstice sunset, but the spires might be a little dusky.

I see what you mean. The view may be better in low sun than at sunset time, so (if I go to Oxford and if the sun is out) I'll go to South Park either in the morning or tea time.

This tree, sadly, is now dead, and is fenced off.

Well done for taking those shots when it was still possible.

How sad, though some will say it opens up the view.

It doesn't, because it's still standing. Presumably it's been left in situ as a habitat, fenced off for safety reasons.

Nevertheless I had a quite productive day in Oxford yesterday, although thanks to a cancelled train and a long wait at Reading, I arrived half an hour behind schedule. I got the X3 bus from St Aldgate's to South Park. By the time I got there it was midday, but being so near the Winter solstice the sun was still low, and I got a reasonable 'dreaming spires' shot with the iPhone, having Photoshopped out a crane and pylon or two. The pictures I got during the day are of varying quality but only a couple are similar to shots I've taken before.

I had lunch in Browns, bought two pork pies from the one remaining butcher in the Covered Market (Fellers is still closed up, and I think the tourist board should get realistic-looking replicas of a headless deer, hog and turkeys made and hung outside the shop, because they were one of Oxford's most memorable sights).

Afterwards I climbed St Mary's tower (which I first did in 1963, and again with you in 2011, the stairs getting steeper and more arduous each time) and walked via the University parks and Jericho (that Blavatnik building is an abortion, I quite agree). I'd planned to return to the station via Port Meadow but the river path was submerged, and instead returned via the canal and your bridge. I see that the moorings are still in limbo and looking forlorn, but the intentions are good - they're seeking donations to enable them to be turned into something reasonably attractive.

1. Oxford from South Park
2. They were jolly good Fellers. I'd forgotten that there was another (poultry) butcher, visible here on the right, sadly also now gone.

It's certainly not unreasonable.

Image quality at this distance from even a good smartphone is never going to be as good as that from a camera proper using a long lens and heavy tripod. But when uploaded onto Ipernity, Flickr, Facebook etc. the difference is barely noticeable, and (needless to say) an iPhone is quicker in use and easier to carry around. Since I've had one I haven't used my compact digicam once.
