1908 Haynes Model U

1908 Haynes Model U
The Haynes Automobile Company was a United States automobile manufacturing company which produced automobiles in Kokomo, Indiana, from 1905 to 1924. The company was formerly known as the Haynes-Apperson company which produced automobiles under that name from 1896-1905. Co-founder Elwood Haynes changed the name of the company after fellow co-founders Elmer and Edgar Apperson left to form the Apperson Brothers Automobile Company in 1901. The Haynes Automobile Company was declared bankrupt in 1924 and went out of business in 1925.

This vehicle has a 2 door tourer type body with a front mounted engine supplying power to the rear wheels. The Haynes Model U's engine is a naturally aspirated petrol, 9.3 litre, 4 cylinder with 2 valves per cylinder. The engine transfers its power through to the wheels by means of a 3 speed manual gearbox.

Another beautiful old car beautifully captured Norm and an interesting read too. That sure looks like a great place to visit! :)

Thanks Paul! The Indianapolis 500 Speedway Museum is a popular stop for most visitors to Indianapolis. I try and go out there a couple of times a year. Mostly to try out new cameras or lens, but they are starting to have evening lectures on automotive history and I may be going a little more often as a result. One of Elwood Hayne's companies continues to this day making specialty metals. Elwood gets credit here for the patent of Martensitic stainless steel. The story is that his wife hated to polish the silver service and he developed a set that didn't require it!
