The DUKW

The DUKW
The DUKW (colloquially known as Duck) is a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the 2-ton capacity CCKW trucks used by the U.S. military in World War II. Designed by a partnership under military auspices of Sparkman & Stephens and General Motors Corporation (GMC), the DUKW was used for the transportation of goods and troops over land and water. Excelling at approaching and crossing beaches in amphibious warfare attacks, it was intended only to last long enough to meet the demands of combat. Surviving DUKWs have since found popularity as tourist craft in marine environments.

They have a fleet of these in Boston, Mass., painted and decorated and are used to give tours of the city at the end of the tour they take it out into Lake Charles to see the waterfront from the water. They will have children come up front to sit with the tour guide and get to do the steering! We had few children on our tour so I got to take a turn maneuvering the duck. I now have a sticker that says: I Drove The Duck. lol good shot Norm. :)

That's just ducky Chris! I keep thinking I'll stop in at the Dells and go for a ride someday. It's a bit of a zoo to go there though!

Thanks Paul! My Uncle had one of these and back in the day when we had the family reunions on the river ... he planned to drive it to the reunion, but got it hung up on a sandbar and never made it to the reunion.
