Waxed Cheddar Cheese

Waxed Cheddar Cheese
Here's my cheddar cheese, all waxed and ready to age for 3 or 4 months. The waxing process went smoothly, (if you'll pardon the pun), and now it looks like cheese is supposed to look like!

how do you wax it? I have only used wax to do candles and seal mason jars, just melt and pour simple enough for me. This looks rather professional, professional enough to mail to Canada I'd say!

I found out you have to use cheese wax. It's a special, softer wax that's pliable enough for cheese. The recipe I had said to dip half of it in the wax, let it dry a few seconds, then dip it two more times. Then set it down with the wax side up to dry a little before repeating the process for the other half. What I did was to dip half of it once, let it dry a few seconds, then dip it again. Then, I sat it down to dry for a while and did the other one. Then, I came back and dipped it twice again on that same side. After I had done both, I put them in the icebox to set real good so I could hold them by the wax half and dip the other side. It worked perfectly, plus it had four coats instead of three. And not only that - I didn't get any wax on my fingers!

That does look like quite a fine finish.
