The jointer uses an LPG torch to melt solder (60 lead/ 40 tin) which is wiped around the cable, using a piece of hide to build a thickness of solder which seals the cable and gives some strength to the joint. Sterene, a fat based product, is melted onto the assist the wiping process.

Paper insulated lead-covered cable was damaged by NBN builders placing too much gear in the cable pit. Cable jointers from Telstra are repairing the water-damaged circuits. They were working at this and another nearby junction pit and pillar.

Hier was open vuur verboden. Beste wensen Frans......

GrahamH Hello, this is a very interesting photo, and also an unknown way of connecting cables for 2 PLK me! I made a lot of cable connections, 700 Mtr underground in a coal mine. Here was naked flames prohibited. We used cast iron sleeves that were full cast with liquid tar. Later resin sleeves Scotch Cast 3M Company. Moreover, I have all your photo's viewed with great interest, and learned a lot about Australia, far more than at school! Best Wishes French .....

These lead covered paper insulated cables are an old technology. These would date from when this area was opened for housing about 40 years ago.

Thanks for the info about your underground work.

The 1970s were when plastic sheathed plastic insulated cables were introduced. These had their joints sealed with epoxy in various shape molds or with epoxy lined heatshrink sleeves.
