Locos 3246 and 5919 at Broadmeadow. The last regular steam-hauled passenger service, Singleton to Newcastle and return is hauled by 3246. It is serviced here during the day prior to its run back to Singleton. There are only months to go before it was withdrawn and sold for scrap. Sometime in 1971.

They were goers. I think there are 2 operational in preservation. They were a very successful loco. Many were two million milers and all 191 lasted until displaced by diesels or outer Sydney suburban electrification. They outlasted in regular service all the later passenger locos. I rode behind this one a few times in the Newcastle area and had a cab ride Singleton to Newcastle once.
