Old Government House, Brisbane
|
|
|
|
Queensland's first Government House is located at Gardens Point in the grounds of the Queensland University of Technology at the end of George Street in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The building's construction was the first important architectural work undertaken by the newly formed Government of Queensland.
The government residential building was constructed to accommodate the first Governor of Queensland, Sir George Bowen, and his family.
The two-storey building was designed by colonial architect Charles Tiffin in the Classical revival style in 1860.
The first stage of the building was completed in March 1862 by builder Joshua Jeays. The building is built from locally-sourced materials, predominantly sandstone, porphyry, red cedar, hoop pine and cast iron.

Brisbane River, Queensland
The Wheel of Brisbane is a 60-metre (197 ft) tall transportable Ferris wheel installation erected as part of the 20th anniversary of World Expo 88 and the 150th anniversary of the State of Queensland 1859–2009 celebrations.
It is located at the northern entrance to South Bank Parklands, the transformed World Expo '88 site by the Brisbane River. The ride opened in August 2008. Originally operated by World Tourist Attractions, it was initially scheduled to be an attraction of South Bank from 2008 to 2010 but has now been extended to remain until 2013.
Each of the 42 air-conditioned capsules can seat up to six adults and two children providing a total passenger capacity of 336. The ride lasts for approximately 12 minutes and provides 360° views across the city.

"Spectacular Brisbane Views
Our giant observation wheel offers a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of Brisbane City from the heart of Brisbane’s cultural, lifestyle and entertainment precinct, the Parklands at South Bank . Unrivaled for its view, a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane is an uplifting experience that will take you almost 60m above the ground in the safety and comfort of a fully enclosed air conditioned capsule."

We joined the Brisbane CityCat at the Apollo Ferry point in Bulimba. It was a grey, overcast day in contrast to our last trip on Monday, when it was spectacularly blue. Still, there were images to capture. Our host on the Ferry, Pat, welcomed us in a friendly fashion and when she noticed me taking photos, she asked where we were going and gave me a brochure explaining the routes.
Later, just before we were about to disembark at South Bank, I asked Pat if she would mind haviing her photo taken, and explained the 100 Strangers project. She was happy to oblige and gave me her email address so that I could send on the photos and links.
Pat has been in Brisbane for 2 years, having previously lived in Mackay in Northern Queensland. She loves her job on the Ferries.
We hopped off and joined another ferry later for the rest of our trip to St Lucia and back.
Many thanks Pat, it was a pleasure to meet you.
I took two photos, one with flash and one without. I selected the second one, without the flash, as the main photo.
This is the 13th portrait in my 100 Strangers project.

www.ipernity.com/group/daysincolour365
This is a fun group with a theme colour for each month of the year, with one photo taken each day of the month in the theme colour. Posting to the group will start 1st January 2014.
Please feel free to join the group any time before then to show your interest. January’s theme colour will be published in late December.

Daryn, Weekend Fisherman
|
|
I was taking photos of a White Heron on the jetty at Chaplin Park when the fisherman there said I could get closer to it as it was a bait thief so pretty tame. I took a few more photos and a back view of Daryn fishing and then wandered off with the dogs.
I then thought of going back to take a closer portrait of Daryn and the bird. I explained the 100 Strangers project and where he could find the photos.
He said he comes down here regularly at the weekends to fish, before the footy.
Daryn is a local, having lived all his life in the area, living in Tewantin.
During the week he works on pipelines.
Many thanks Daryn for participating, it was lovely to meet you.
I took a couple of photos with the zoom lens and a couple with the standard lens, all in very strong sunlight at the end of the jetty so Daryn’s face was in shadow. An atmospheric portrait of a ‘Weekend Fisherman’. As a bonus, you can see the reflection in Daryn’s sunglasses of me taking the photo with our Border Collie, Sooki, and the long jetty :-)
The main photo is cropped.
This is portrait 12 in my 100 strangers project.
